Someone recently told me that a horse can feel your heart and energy from four feet away. I didn’t know this was true until my recent visit to see Sophie.

Just before I went into the barn, I found out some disturbing news about a former colleague. A pit in my stomach immediately followed, and I tried to just let it go, and put my focus on the task ahead: grooming Sophie.

The act of combing out the knots, picking at the hooves and giving your love and attention to a horse can be very calming and intimate. Often times, I find it to be more connecting than riding. I grabbed the brush and started tending to Sophie.

The first few strokes into the process didn’t go well, because she tried to bite me. Thankfully, she was in the cross ties, so she wasn’t able to make contact. Then as I made my way to her back end, she tried to kick me. This was terrifying – as she’s never done this before. I quickly backed away.

Lynn Diettrich (who owns the farm) came over when she realized I was having trouble.

“I want you to take a few deep breaths,” she said. “She’s feeling your energy. What is going on?”

I smiled, realizing that just because I might have looked OK on the outside, my insides were a mess.

Quickly, I took some deep breaths, and imagined a bright light beaming “tight and bright” from all sides. After about 30 seconds, I was calm. I then pictured a golden light coming around Sophie. I asked my angels and guides to surround me and protect both of us from any negative energy. 

I picked up the brush and continued. Sophie sat there perfectly still. She was calm and accepting of every single stroke. I didn’t have another issue again.
